Medications to Avoid during Pregnancy

This list does NOT have every drug to avoid during pregnancy. Always talk to your health care provider before taking any drug or supplement.  Some of the most dangerous medications during pregnancy include:

  • The acne medication isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • The medication thalidomide (Thalomid) – for a type of skin disease
  • The psoriasis medication acitretin (Soriatane)
  • Medications containing phenylephrine
  • Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol)
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)

Please use this list as a starting point to talk with your doctor. The CDC recommends that pregnant women should NOT stop or start taking any type of medication that they need without first talking with a doctor. It’s best for a pregnant woman to talk with her healthcare provider about everything she’s taking or thinking about taking. Always consult your doctor; this is your first and most important step.
